Our mentors support the education mission of Athena Project. We do this by providing one-on-one assistance to young women learning to write, paint, dance and make music. We seek women who have a passion – for the arts and for helping young women. No teaching experience is needed. For each area, we prefer folks who have a background in that discipline. For instance, for mentors in our Girls Write program, we typically collaborate with women who have a background in literature, theatre and/or writing. This doesn’t mean we require a degree or that you work in the field; only that you have some experience which will help you communicate with our young students.

Our mentors are not teachers, disciplinarians or (necessarily) experts in their respective fields. We look for folks who will listen, encourage and cheerlead. Time requirements vary. We depend upon mentors in our summer camps and also in the preparation for our Girls Write Celebration which is part of our annual festival in March. We ask our mentors to attend two orientation meetings and then consistently help with the program that fits your schedule best. Each program culminates with a performance and attendance is mandatory for that event.
